Conversion Jobs and Job Priority

Conversion runs as a job that is tracked on the Jobs page.

By default, jobs are started following this priority:

1. On-the-fly conversion jobs
These are one-document jobs. They are started when users view documents that have not been converted yet. Job names look like this: <document ID>: near native. To not clutter the list of jobs, these jobs are removed after they have finished successfully. Only jobs with errors are retained.
2. Manual conversion jobs
The default job name is Bulk conversion. The job type is Conversion. Jobs are retained on the Jobs page for a configurable time. Manual conversion jobs always have a priority of 10.
Reconversion may result in two jobs:
  • One for just adding missing views, such as display files. This is the same job that is run for any unconverted document. the Job type is Conversion.
  • One for replacing conversions. This one has the job type Clear and convert.
3. Rules-based preconversion jobs
The default job name is New Rule <date>#<incremental number>. Jobs are started according to the order of rules on the Preconversion Rules page. Jobs are retained on the Jobs page for a configurable time.
The order of rules on the Preconversion Rules page reflects the prioritization among preconversion jobs. By default, the highest priority is 9. The job priority is one less for each active rule following the first. If the rules list is longer than 9 entries, negative numbers are used for job prioritization.
If you use a dedicated conversion server, you can increase the priority, as preconversion jobs won’t have much impact on other conversion jobs in this case. To do so, change the conversion jobs properties.

Note: Do not manipulate preconversion jobs on the Jobs page. If you pause a preconversion job, this also pauses the automatic execution of the underlying preconversion rule. You need to start or cancel the job to make the rule work again. If you cancel a preconversion job, the rule is executed after five minutes and a new job is started.

4. Preconversion jobs for documents marked for redaction
Documents that are marked for redaction are automatically submitted for preconversion for viewing in Redaction view every five minutes by default. This operation is run by a system-internal preconversion rule that identifies documents with the Mark for Redaction flag. The job name is Documents marked for redaction. Although these jobs are executed every five minutes, they are set to the lowest priority to ensure that jobs triggered by on-the-fly conversion and user-created preconversion rules are not blocked.
